Abstract

Objective

Since infection control is paramount in healthcare

the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) plays a critical role in preventing nosocomial infections caused by improper processing of medical devices and supplies. Despite its importance in infection control

CSSD staff frequently lack adequate infection control understanding and training. This cross-sectional study aims to assess the current status of infection control knowledge

training frequency

and perceptions of adequacy of personal protective equipment (PPE) and sterilization equipment among CSSD staff.

Methods

This study involves a total of 357 CSSD staff members from different hospitals.

Results

The demographic characteristics show predominantly female employees with varying educational backgrounds. Although the majority of participants reported that their hospitals provided stratified training

a significant portion indicated that the in-house training they had was sporadic or nonexistent. In addition

participation in external training is sub-optimal

with nearly 18% of participants never having attended such training. Perceptions of PPE adequacy were divided; 65.27% found PPE sufficient

while 34.73% expressed worries. Similarly

58.54% believed that sterilization equipment was up to date and well-maintained

while 41.46% expressed skepticism about it. Only 14.57% of respondents felt completely confident in their self-assessed knowledge of infection control criteria.

Conclusion

The findings underscore the necessity of regular

comprehensive training and improved resource allocation for PPE and sterilization equipment. In order to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare-associated infections

healthcare settings shall close these gaps and enhance the preparedness of CSSD staff in infection control.
