Abstract

Objective

The present study intends to enhance the operational performance and infection control in the Central Sterile Supply Department (abbr. CSSD) through the application of monitoring indicators in a sentinel hospital.

Methods

Data sources include the quality scores of surgical instruments processed by CSSD at Xuzhou Renci Hospital in 2023 and 2024

staff assessment scores

and satisfaction of clinical departments. The analysis is conducted based on five critical indicators

including cleaning qualification

packaging qualification

sterilization monitoring qualification

sterile distribution qualification

and wet pack incidence

along with clinical department satisfaction with CSSD sterile items and staff operational and theoretical proficiency. Quality changes over the two-year application period were compared.

Results

After two years of applying monitoring indicators in the sentinel hospital

the cleaning qualification increased from 96.55% to 99.73% (

0.001)

the packaging qualification from 97.75% to 99.69% (

0.001)

the sterilization monitoring qualification from 99.37% to 99.97% (

0.001)

the sterile distribution qualification from 99.26% to 99.99% (

0.001)

and wet pack incidence decreased from 0.0051% to 0.002 5% (

=0.097). The staff assessment scores improved from 97.72±0.96 to 98.92±0.71 (

0.001)

and the satisfaction of clinical departments increased from 97.72% to 99.58% (

0.001).

Conclusion

The application of monitoring indicators in the sentinel hospital has laid a solid foundation for and attained notable accomplishments in improving operational performance in CSSD and infection control throughout the hospital by shifting the imperfect quality control evaluation criteria previously to effective data analysis currently.
